Electric vehicle tire buyer's guide

Tesla tires

There’s no doubt about it: the future of the automotive industry is electric.

But what about the tire industry?

What are the differences between what an electric vehicle needs out of its tires versus what a gas-powered vehicle needs?

In general, electric vehicle tires need more durable sidewalls and higher carry loads because the batteries that power the car can weigh more than gas-powered engines. Lower rolling resistance is also generally desirable in order to maximize battery range. But over everything, electric vehicle tires need to be able to withstand some of the near-instant torque EVs generate.

We have been providing gas-powered vehicles with tires since 1960, so we understand that the needs of internal cumbustion engine (commonly abbreviated to ICE) vehicles can vary. But while electric vehicles can use some of the same tires as their gas-powered counterparts, they typically run the thicker sidewall and lower rolling resistance versions within the same family of tires.

As you read on, we will explore the current and upcoming electric-only vehicles and the tires best suited for them. Like any other vehicle, electric vehicles have a few different categories. Some fit into more of a performance and luxury category, while others fall into a standard commuter car category.

What Are The Best Electric Vehicle Tires?

Electric vehicles in the performance and luxury categories (Tesla, Jaguar, Mercedes and BMW) require tires with extra grip, reinforced sidewalls and high load ranges (as well as a generally larger contact patches).

Using any Tesla as an example, some of the more popular replacement tires according to Tesla owners include:

Commuter-style electric vehicles (vehicles with low to medium battery ranges and lower weight) usually require tires that maximize battery range efficiency. Tires with low rolling resistance, tough sidewalls and a generally lower cost are favored for these electric vehicles. We made these selections based on customer reviews and your potential needs as a driver of an electric vehicle.
