2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Tires – Our Picks
By: Discount Tire
There’s no denying that the future of personal travel is electric. Thanks in part to Tesla for bringing electric vehicles into the zeitgeist, more everyday drivers are getting behind the wheel of an EV, and with good reason.
Electric vehicles inherently push the boundaries of what cars are capable of. Each new model represents a serious step forward in the style and function while also increasing the overall availability of electric vehicles.
The new Volkswagen ID.4 is an electric SUV that looks to be forward progress in every one of those categories, particularly in making the sporty performance and famed efficiency of electric vehicles more widely available.
Volkswagen ID.4 Details
Built on an entirely new foundation, the VW ID.4 features a 201-hp motor driving the rear wheels. (Patient fans may want to hold out until the all-wheel drive model becomes available, with a purported 302 ponies powering all four wheels.)
Either way, you can expect sporty, GTI-level performance from a ride that looks and feels like the ever-popular Tiguan.
Built on the MEB platform, the ID.4 situates its battery pack in the floor and provides even weight distribution from front to rear. It also boats the high levels of torque drivers have come to expect from electric vehicles. Although it’s not breaking any records with its efficiency, the ID4 commands a respectable 250-mile range per charge.
While we’re excited to learn more about this new EV from VW, we’re even more excited to talk about the tires, of course.
Tires on the Volkswagen ID4
According to VW, Standard and Statement ID 4 models come with 19 inch 5-spoke alloy wheels. You can also opt for the Statement and Gradient upgrades and get your new EV planted on a set of 20’’ rims instead.
According to our research, whether you get the highest package option with the 20 inch rims or the standard model with 19’’ wheels, you can expect the tires to be 235 series rubber. That means we’re likely looking at the following tire fitments for the 2021 VW ID.4:
No matter what sizes they end up running, we think a few things are going to be true about the tires on the VW ID4.
First, they’ll be light. All electric vehicles prize reduced rolling resistance in their tires. In short, rolling resistance refers to how much work it takes your vehicle to turn your tires. The easier it is to spin your tires, the more “fuel” efficient your ID 4 is. That means greater travel distance between charges.
Second, they’ll be sporty. While you want low rolling resistance for efficiency, you’re also going to need grip to control all of the torque that your electric motor is going to put out.
Third, and finally, we imagine VW ID.4 tires will have a tread pattern that’s optimized for road noise reduction. When you drive in a vehicle that has virtually zero engine noise, other sounds become far more prominent. In electric vehicles, this is typically road noise.
To address this, tire manufacturers do what they can to cancel out road noise. Some even build a foam center on the inside of the tire, further dampening sound. This helps you enjoy the peace and quiet of your EV, whether you’re cruising around town at low speeds or zipping down the freeway while trying to shave a few minutes off your commute.
However, it’s really your driving style and needs dictate what tires you get. Want to optimize your ID4 for responsive performance? There’s an option for that. Or maybe you’re a conscientious driver who craves the fuel-efficiency and ride comfort electric vehicles offer. Regardless of how you plan to drive it, there’s a tire option out there for your needs.
2021 VW ID 4 Tire Predictions
With that, let’s take a peek into the future and see what tires we think might grace the lightweight alloy rims of the new 2021 Volkswagen ID4:
Looking at that list of tires, you’ll see that they offer control no matter the weather while supporting the weight of your vehicle. Designed to provide precise steering feedback, you can better handle all the torque and horsepower the ID 4 will be channeling into the ground. And what’s more, they’re all optimized for comfort and low road noise levels.
Because of that, we think any of these selections would be great as OE tires for the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4.
Are you concerned about winter performance? There are great winter tire options available for the ID 4 as well, including the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 and the Michelin X-Ice Xi3, both of which can control your ride in harsh weather while still maintaining reasonable fuel-efficiency and responsive handling when winter roads are dryer.
No matter what tires Volkswagen outfits the 2021 ID4 in, we’re pretty sure it’s going to be equal parts dynamic, capable and comfortable. We’ll be keeping our ears to the ground for any new information about the VW ID 4, so follow this page for future updates!
