About Trailer Tires:

Designed to carry heavier loads for towing, trailer tires can be used for boats, campers, utility trailers, and toy haulers. Choose from bias ply and radial ply options. Make sure your tires are designed to handle the load weight you need and driving conditions you’ll encounter.

CAN I USE CAR TIRES ON MY BOAT TRAILER?

No, it’s not recommended to use car tires on your boat trailer.

Trailer tires need to be strong and durable enough to safely tow heavy loads and combat heat buildup – something car tires cannot do very well. Trailer tires often come with a Special Tire (ST) designation to signal their capability.

Car tires frequently do not have the appropriate load rating to handle towables like boats (even small ones). There is always a risk of overloading your tires.

BOAT TRAILER TIRE MAINTENANCE

Boat trailers experience some uniquely harsh conditions that other trailers do not, mainly submersion in water and strong UV exposure.

To keep your boat trailer tires in good shape:

  1. Regularly inspect them for wear and damage

  2. Regularly check for proper air pressure

  3. Do not overload your trailer beyond your tire and trailer’s capacity

  4. Park or store your trailer somewhere dry and (preferably) covered

Water, especially saltwater, can lead to premature wear and damage to your tire’s rubber. Regularly rinsing down your boat trailer and cleaning your tires will help prevent damage and tire rot. Avoid keeping them submerged for long periods.

Park your boat trailer in a dry place if you plan to store it for a long period of time. Grass can introduce moisture over time to your tires so parking on a hard surface is best.

CHOOSING BOAT TRAILER TIRES

Some things you need to think about when choosing boat trailer tires:

  • Tire size: Check your owner’s manual or look at your current tires for the right size. Make sure they match your trailer wheels and manufacturer’s specs.

  • Boat weight: Find your boat and trailer’s weight when fully loaded so you can choose tires that can handle the total weight.

  • Tire type: Choose ST (Special Trailer) tires as they are engineered to handle heavy loads, offer improved water performance, and resist heat buildup.

  • Maintenance: Keeping your tires as healthy as possible keeps them rolling for longer (and more safely).

The Goodyear Endurance and the Hartland ST Radial are popular boat trailer tire choices thanks to their heavy-duty construction, resistance to overheating, and high speed rating allowances.
