2024 Best Off-Road Truck Packages and Their Tires

an off-road vehicle pictured in the desert

Off-roading, AKA driving an all-terrain capable vehicle on unpaved surfaces, sand, dirt, rocks, mud, snow and other rugged terrains has become an incredibly popular hobby and pastime.

With the rising number of off-road enthusiasts (including newcomers and veterans alike) more and more pickup trucks are offered with off-road trim levels that are purpose-built for off-road fun, right off the lot. Knowing which trim level, and which tires, are best for off-roading is key when it comes to enjoying your next adventure!

Your typical original equipment (OE) tire is often specifically chosen for a vehicle to maximize performance, comfort and efficiency. That said, off-roading pickup trims (or off-roading truck packages) usually include more rugged performance features, including all-terrain or mud-terrain tires and even off-road wheels.

If you like your off-road rig’s OE tires, we have OE replacement tires ready for you! And if you want to mod your vehicle out for a specific type of terrain or obstacle type, we got you covered with the biggest selection of aftermarket tires!

And the best part is, we’ve taken out the guesswork and made a list of the best tires for your off-road rig, from your TRD Pro to your TRX or Raptor! We’re here to make your next off-the-beaten-path journey an amazing one!

(Would you rather just shop our all-terrain tire catalog? No problem!)

By the way, we have an amazing selection of the best off-road wheels, including the Fuel Block built in partnership with the late, great Ken Block!

FORD RAPTOR

The Ford F-150 Raptor is a high performance pickup truck designed to be a street-legal version of its off-road racing trophy truck counterpart. With a powerful twin-turbocharged V6 (V8 for the Raptor R!), a 10-speed automatic transmission, mid-travel suspension system and standard four wheel drive (4WD), it's chock full of off-road specific features like hill descent control, a full off-road mode (with no electronic intervention aside from ABS) and stability control.

This off-road animal comes in 315/70R17 and 37x12.5R17 original equipment sizes. As you can see, the F-150 Raptor comes stock with either 35-inch tires or 37-inch tires. Meaning? It’s ready for serious off-road fun with no upsizing needed!

Ford rolls out the Raptor with the BFGoodrich All-Terrain TA KO2 as its OE tire. No surprise there as the high performing Raptor requires a tire that sets the bar high.

Being essentially the king of off-road rubber, the TA KO2 has a fiercely loyal brand following.

This all-terrain tire is a frequent sight on our top all-terrain lists, including our picks for the best all-terrain tires, best all-terrain tires for snow and our Overlanding Guide. And no wonder thanks to its high degree of capability in challenging off-road terrain, rugged structural integrity, year-round performance and rare 50k-mileage warranty.

The KO2 utilizes R&D from BFG’s podium winning Baja style T/A KR2, resulting in their CoreGard Technology for the KO2. This increases the overall rubber thickness and sidewall composition to resist bruising and splitting, even in the harshest environments. Its Advanced Deflection Design system with Serrated Shoulders delivers structural integrity for low-range 4WD scenarios in mud, snow and rocks (especially when aired down).

Looking for an aftermarket off-road tire?

We recommend the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss MT!

With its powerful grip and durability, the Baja Boss MT utilizes a high-void tread pattern with massive tread blocks to dominate difficult terrain like rocks, mud and even sand. Scalloped shoulders and mud scoops clean mud from the tread and continue to propel you forward.

It’s got some serious puncture resistance, too, thanks to its PowerPly XD construction and stone ejector ribs.

Worried about your on-road experience? Don’t, because the carefully designed asymmetric tread pattern delivers welcome on-road manners (for a mud-terrain tire).

For some unearthly reason, Ford didn’t bring the Ford Ranger Raptor to the US initially. Happily, It’s slated to arrive in early 2024 for the American market.

This mid-sized (and mid-priced) off-road capable truck boasts impressive features and construction, making it a highly desirable off-road ride. It comes standard with FOX 2.5-inch Live Valve Internal Bypass shocks for reduced heat buildup and impressively catered control and driving modes.

And if you’re in a tight spot, the Ranger Raptor’s 360 degree camera with a bird’s-eye view (standard!) could be incredibly useful. Its chassis upgrades, including front shock towers, rear shock brackets, front frame rails and suspension mounting points yield a stiffer frame that doesn’t flex as much in off-road terrain.

The Raptor Ranger comes in 285/70R17 OE tire sizes (also known as 33-inch tires) with the Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT equipped. This mud-terrain tire is excellent for terrorizing mud pits anywhere and surprising everyone with respectable on-road handling. Its open tread creates traction on both paved and unpaved surfaces while its sequenced pitch pattern makes your drive reasonably quiet and comfy.

Want to shop for other Goodyear Wrangler tires? Check out our Goodyear Wrangler buyer’s guide!

For a non-OE tire recommendation for the Ranger Raptor, we suggest the new BFGoodrich All-Terrain TA KO3!

Brand spanking new, the TA KO3 somehow reaches new levels of off-road prowess. Perfect for 4WD and 4x4 pickups, the 3-ply polyester casing with steel belts and nylon cap plies work in tandem with multiple stone ejectors to handle rocky terrain like it was a paved surface.

Do you like an aggressive tread pattern? Good, because the interlocking in-groove notches, chamfered sharp edges and minimal voids deliver superior traction and style. The increased wet and light winter weather capability is also boastworthy thanks to a new temperature adaptive gen silica tread compound. The cherry on top? Its 50,000-mile warranty!

TOYOTA TRD PRO

Toyota calls its TRD Pro line “true icons of the off-road” and they’re more than right.

Scan any off-roading group and you’ll probably find a herd of Toyota Tacomas. There’s very good reason that you’ll see so many Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro trucks on the trail. This line is made for luxurious off-road comfort and performance thanks to its premium JBL audio system with dynamic navigation, FOX internal bypass shocks, TRD PRO skid plates, Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select controls.

For the die-hard auto enthusiast, the 3.5L V6 engine comes in a 6 speed automatic or manual transmission with 4x4 capability (obviously). The Bilstein shocks also make things a little smoother on those bumpy, wild trails. Plus, the multi-terrain monitor system and Hill Start Assist Control really ramp up your TRD’s off-road capability.

The Tacoma’s OE size is 265/70R16 (265/70R18 for '24) and, like the Ram TRX, it rolls on a set of Goodyear Wrangler ATs. While an excellent tire, it’s made for balancing on and off-road performance and long-lasting wear (not a bad thing at all). But if you want a tire for weekend hobby overlanding, trail running or other rough riding work, we highly suggest the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2.

Speaking of overlanding, Toyota announced a factory overlanding trim, called the Tacoma Trailhunter, earlier this year. It comes with a rig ready to add your personal overlanding preferences, like a reinforced roof, attachment holes for roof racks, increased bed volume, souped up towing and rugged skid plates. It’s offered in two different four-cylinder powertrains and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid with impressive stats.

According to the press release, the Trailhunter is equipped with 33-inch Goodyear Territory AT tires. You may also want to consider a rugged-terrain option, too. Rugged-terrain tires are a perfect compromise between full-on, aggressive mud-terrain tires and more comfortable, practical all-terrain tires.

And if you like to do things big, your Toyota Tundra TRD PRO works and plays hard. This full-size truck offers impressive capability, and a comfortable size to step up overlanding to a bit of a luxury.

The latest Tundra TRD PRO comes with the i-FORCE MAX 3/4L twin-turbo V6 hybrid engine with 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft of torque. It boasts an eye-widening 12,000 lb towing capacity for confident hauling of toys, tools and more. Like its little Tacoma brother, it comes equipped with Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select and electronically locking rear differential. You’ll appreciate the three inch suspension lift kit, adaptive variable suspension with load leveling rear height control air suspension for even more possibilities (like hauling your ATV and handling hard trails like a boss).

The Tundra comes in either a 275/65R18 or 285/65R18 original equipment tire size.

Because it’s so large, you may not see the Tundra out on the trail as frequently as you will smaller trucks and SUVs like the Tacoma, Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco. This is a pity considering its OE tire, the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W is such an awesome off-roading tire. This all-terrain tire includes a 55,000-mile treadwear warranty (a nice perk) plus heavy features centering around treadwear, wet and winter performance. Its aggressive sidewall, trail performance and excellent weather handling make it an understandably popular tire. Customers especially like its grippy tread with step down features and support ramps that support the tread and offer stone drilling resistance.

The OE Wildpeak equipped is a Toyota exclusive model and does not include the three-peak mountain snowflake severe weather rating. But when it’s time to replace your original equipment tires, you can do no better than choosing another set of A/T3Ws that do include this important feature.

Rumor has it that the AT4W is coming soon, and we just can’t wait!

CHEVY SILVERADO ZR2

It takes some serious confidence to do serious off-road trails in a full size truck but Chevy makes it easy with the Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2.

It’s got the power and armor necessary to really rough it, including a 6.2L V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft of torque to get you through anything. An underbody aluminum skid plate, tucked muffler, front and rear electronic locking differentials and Multimatic DSSV dampers with uniquely toned springs boost maximum front and rear suspension. Silky smooth ride? Yes.

And let us not forget the first ever Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison special edition trim which hones in on all-terrain capability with its rocker protection, custom front bumper, skid plates and factory tuned off-road suspension. This extremely popular package includes an estimated 32.5 degree front angle approach and improved estimated departure angle of 23.4 degrees and 11.2 inch ground clearance for navigating jutting and difficult terrain.

The ZR2 rolls out on 275/70R18 or 285/70R17 Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires. The Bison package’s OE tires are 315/70R17, also with the Wrangler Territory MT. Chevy tested them on the Alpine Loop in Silverton, CO, a 60-mile trip with many detours, high elevation and breathtaking views. It’s not certain if the vehicle they used was the Bison package or not, however.

For an aftermarket tire, we turn you towards the Nitto Trail Grappler MT. It’s easy to see why it’s featured on our best tires for mudding blog with its rugged performance, eye-catching tread pattern and self-cleaning design. It uses a 3-ply sidewall with high turn-up construction that’s resistant to punctures or tears, great for when you’re out in the middle of the wilderness. Reinforced shoulder grooves add extra grip without sacrificing tread block stability.

We especially like the computer optimized tread pattern that gives you amazing mud slinging grip and pavement comfort all at once. And the dual sidewall designs offer a customizable touch!

GMC AT4X

The GMC AT4X line was built for off-road and overlanding enthusiasts by off-road and overlanding enthusiasts! American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) is a world renowned supplier of premium aftermarket parts and accessories for recreational driving and overland applications.

AEV equips the GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X and the GMC Canyon AT4X with premium all-terrain features and toys, like AEV stamped steel front and rear bumpers with front winch capability, racing inspired wheels with recessed valve stems and off-road rocker panel protectors with optional bolt-on step assist (for when not on the trail).

Based on the prominent AT4 line of all-terrain trims for GMC, these models go further with impressive capability like 11.6 inch ground clearance, factory installed 1.5 inch suspension lift and more powerful 6.2 liter V8 engine for the Sierra. Confident towing with intelligent trailering assistant tech makes towing a breeze. The Canyon AT4X also impresses with professional grade overlanding features like 17’’ beadlock wheels, 35’’ tires and ultra-high strength skid plates.

Like the Chevy Silverado ZR2, the GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X has an original equipment tire size of 275/70R18 while the Canyon uses a 285/70R17. It also rolls out the factory floor on a set of 35’’ Goodyear Territory MT tires.

Considering the extreme capability of both the Canyon and the Sierra AT4X editions, we recommend the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 for its robust strength and performance.

JEEP GLADIATOR RUBICON

You can’t talk about off-roading and trailblazing trucks without talking about a Jeep, now can you?

The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon was reintroduced in 2018 but was originally made in the 60-80’s. It’s a midsize pickup truck/Jeep Wrangler Frankenstein’s monster. With the towing capacity of a truck and the rough-road temperament of a Jeep, it’s an excellent option for the off-roader who wants to tow their toys. The max towing package for the Gladiator is 7,650lbs but comes with a 4,000lb towing capacity standard.

Also, you just can’t feel the breeze the same way as you can with a “naked” Jeep! And it’s just as much a Jeep as it is a truck.

The Rubicon trim comes with a front and rear axle electronic lockers with an electronic disconnect front sway bar. That front camera is also pretty handy when scoping out your line of sight, too. The approach, breakover and departure angles are all pretty comparable to a Wrangler Rubicon (just mind your tow hitch).

The Gladiator rolls out on 285/70R17 33-inch all-terrain tires (or you can upgrade to 33 inch mud-terrain tires). Our chosen tire? The BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3. Its rugged carcass, aggressive tread pattern and incredible grip are only some of its noteworthy features. Plus, BFG’s Krawl-Tek compound delivers amazing traction on slick surfaces, making it an excellent mud-terrain option.

Want a second option? We think you can’t go wrong with the new BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3. It gives you additional traction in not only mud, but rock, dirt and sand. Although its tread pattern isn’t as aggressive as the KM3 (mud-terrain tires are more extreme in the tread anyway), it's very sturdy with its 3-ply polyester casing, steel belts and nylon cap plies. Stone ejectors keep rocks and other debris from compromising your tread. Not only does it include a three-peak mountain snowflake rating for severe weather, but it also comes with a 50k-mile warranty on top of that. This tire gives you a great deal of versatility, a boon for an off-road truck!

DODGE RAM 1500 TRX

It’s impossible to not be excited about the Dodge RAM 1500 TRX. This absolute beast with a supercharged 6.2 liter V8 engine guzzles gas like you’d expect but is delightfully speedy and off-road capable with 702-hp, an eight speed transmission and 4WD.

This is the off-roader for those with a disposable income, with even the base price starting at about $100k. You get a luxe, cushy interior with heated and ventilated front seats. This half-ton truck is a Hellcat-powered monster with a striking curb weight that is surprisingly easy to handle on both paved and unpaved surfaces. Its reinforced steel frame sits on 35 inch all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, offering 11.8 inches of ground clearance—clearly it’s bred for off-road thrills.

Based on its specs, the TRX is an obvious competitor for the Ford Raptor. The dinosaur naming scheme is another big clue, too!

The original equipment tire size for the RAM 1500 TRX is 325/65R18 and comes with the Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT. This tire is commonly also the OE option for the Ford F-150, probably because of its long lasting construction and balanced on/off-road capability. The all-terrain tread delivers competent traction in rock, dirt, gravel and paved surfaces but it is by no means considered an extreme off-road tire.

While that OE tire is great for gravel feeder roads and soft-road adventures, you may want an aftermarket upgrade if you’re planning more challenging off-road jaunts. If so, we recommend the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3. It scores high marks for the brute carcass strength and rugged traction this high powered off-road rig requires for the trail.

HONDA RIDGELINE TRAILSPORT

The Honda Ridgeline TrailSport is clearly designed to compete with Toyota’s hugely popular Tacoma TRD PRO. It comes with an off-road tuned suspension, all-terrain tires on 18 inch wheels (in a pewter finish) and a steel underbody skid plate. It comes with a 3.5L V6 engine with 280 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft of torque using a nine speed transmission. It has 7.6 inches of ground clearance and includes drive modes for mud, snow and sand plus traction control settings for adapting to your terrain.

Unlike the Tacoma, however, it is all-wheel drive (not 4WD) and uses Honda’s i-VTM torque vectoring system to deliver up to 70% of the truck’s power to the rear wheel(s) as needed. Its unique suspension is tuned to boost articulation without sacrificing on-road stability, making it a good getting-around vehicle option, too.

Honda’s really pushing for the “rugged” look and capability of this off-road capable pickup while also touting its intelligent, practical design for a multitude of other functions, such as towing, hauling and work. Its “dual action” tailgate opens like a traditional tailgate or swings open like a door for easy bed access and to reach the 7.3 cubic inch intercooler floor. You’ll be able to carry a four foot piece of plywood laying flat on this bed due to its dimensions.

They come with 245/60R18 General Grabber A/T Sport tires that add a nice touch of height and grip. The General Grabber A/T Sport also offers improved puncture resistance and grip in off-road environments.

However, to really bring the Ridgeline up to par, we recommend the Toyo Open Country A/T III. It comes with a lengthy 50 to 65k-mile warranty and is rated for severe weather, really expanding the general utility of the Ridgeline. Versatility is the A/T III’s MO, with its 3D multi-wave siping, aggressive tread and damage resistant tread compound. They’re an excellent option for easy trails, dry graded roads and muddy dirt paths (the tread self cleans very well). Its long-wearing nature and adverse weather handling also make it a favorite with customers who aren’t necessarily climbing over boulders on the regular.
