WHAT IS THE BEST RIM SIZE FOR OFF-ROADING?
When it comes to off-roading, your wheel and tire size relationship is important. In general, more sidewall is better for traction. In aired down scenarios, more of the tire can grab terrain and driving surfaces and cushion your drive. Tougher sidewalls means your traction won’t end abruptly due to damage.
Probably the most popular tire and rim size for off-roading is 17 inch rims with 35 inch tires. This size seems to do very well at absorbing shocks and impacts while looking nicely sized and rugged.
Typical wheels on mid-size trucks and SUVs are 17 inches but it’s not uncommon to see 18 inch and 20 inch truck wheels for half, three quarter and one-ton trucks. For off-roading, bigger is not necessarily better. Larger wheels are less durable because the corresponding tire will have less sidewall. But in some instances, they can provide more space for larger tires with a larger contact patch for grip on terrain. They are also more comfortable on-road and better for towing.
The most common wheel widths are 17x9 and 20x9. Keep your tire width a few inches greater than the wheel width to allow for better bead retention and keep the sidewall upright.
